Clean wood floors were the standard of luxury before the 1990s. The return of clean floors is actually the return of traditional American hardwood flooring. From the late 1990s through 2018, the United States was flooded with C-D grade or common hardwood flooring from overseas. Common – C-D grade hardwood flooring will have knots, splits, and excessive sapwood. These imperfections were labeled “Rustic” and were minimized by applying texture, like scalping or wire brushing and filling with putty. Black putty was used to fill in knotts and splits. Today, they will use a matching putty to fill in these imperfections in common grade flooring to give them the appearance of Premium or A-B grade wood flooring.
